The results are in! The National Geographic Society recently named the following Elkhorn Public Schools’ students as semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2020 National Geographic GeoBee State Competition:

Sebastian Goeller, West Bay Elementary;
Ryan Mensch, Elkhorn Grandview Middle School;
Brennan Schafer, Elkhorn Valley View Middle School;
Drake Walling, Skyline Elementary;
Rachel Wu, Elkhorn Ridge Middle School
The contest will be held via an online-proctored exam on Friday, March 27, 2020.
This is the second level of the National Geographic GeoBee competition, which is now in its 32nd year. To determine each school champion, GeoBee competitions were held in schools throughout the state with students in the fourth through eighth grades. School champions also took an online qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. Up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories were invited to compete in the State GeoBees.
State champions will receive a medal, $1,000 in cash, and other prizes, as well as a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent their state in the National Championship on May 18-21 where they will compete for additional cash, awards and college scholarships. The second- and third-place State GeoBee winners will receive cash awards of $300 and $100, respectively.
Registration for the 2020 EPS Summer Enrichment Program is now open for EPS students entering grades 1-12 for the 2020-2021 school year.
The Summer Enrichment Program features inspiring courses created and taught by EPS certified staff members and designed to expand student experiences and enrich summer learning.
Summer Enrichment session dates will be June 1-5, June 8-12, and June 15-19. Courses will be offered at Westridge Elementary and Elkhorn Middle School.

The month of January is nationally recognized as National Mentoring Month when programs honor mentors for their service and the impact they’re making by simply being there for students.
In honor of National
Mentoring Month, TeamMates of Elkhorn would like to thank the more than 80
mentors who have dedicated their time to being there for our students. The commitment made by mentors is an
impactful one, as the relationships they are building are long-lasting and
incredibly beneficial for our students.
“We are grateful for every TeamMates mentor,” TeamMates Executive
Director Sarah Waldman explained. “Every TeamMates mentor I speak with
talks about how mentoring has been an incredibly positive experience for them.
I hope more caring adults will join us so they too can experience the positive
impact of mentoring.”
TeamMates mentors fulfill the mission of the TeamMates Mentoring Program of impacting the world by inspiring youth to reach their full potential by meeting with their mentee one-on-one weekly during the school year. The TeamMates Mentoring Program is a school-based program, providing meeting times only during school hours.
Mentees are students in grades 3-12 who can be nominated to participate
in the program in one of three ways. They can be nominated by a parent or a
school staff member, or students can self-nominate. Mentors are not tutors or
counselors, nor are they there to “fix” anything— they are there to be friends.
Matches are relationship-based, and mentors
are matched with mentees based on similar interests and life experiences.
