Child Find is the process by which children from birth to age 21, who have identified or suspected disabilities, are located and evaluated to determine their need for special education services. In Nebraska, the Child Find process is implemented through the public schools. Evaluation and needed special education and related services are provided at no cost.
For very young children who are not yet school age, these services are available through the child’s resident school district. If there are concerns for very young children, birth to five, who reside within Elkhorn Public Schools boundaries, parents may request a screening by calling the Student Services Office at (402) 289-2579.
Children who have any physical condition, including hearing, vision or motor problems, a medical condition, behavioral, communication or cognitive problems or delays, which may be expected to or are known to impact a child’s development or learning should be referred for evaluation. For children who are school age and reside within Elkhorn Public Schools boundaries, parents can contact their child’s teacher or principal to express their concerns and discuss the process for referral.
