Second graders across the district were simply crawling with excitement as they changed their status from student to entomologists as part of their recent science studies focused on mealworms. Students take this experiment very seriously as they spend time predicting, observing, and recording the life cycle and behaviors of their mealworms. Throughout their time with their insects, students are responsible for providing their four basic needs of food, shelter, water, and air.
The second-grade teaching team at Arbor View Elementary notes how much they love starting the year with the insect unit! “It is always exciting to see the students’ faces light up when they hear that they will be creating a habitat for their mealworms. The mealworms truly become a class pet during these few weeks. The students love watching them grow and seeing how they change over time,” they state.
